Black Narcissus (Movie Review)
I love a big beautiful bell very much. This movie is strikingly beautiful, but the edit in particular blew my mind in a few really special moments. well the role of the nun draws people who have lived real lives, who experience real feelings and real humanity, and none of that leaves them when they don the cloth! the retreat into the structure and practice of their new world may initially act as a balm upon whatever struggle led them to seek a life of service and discipline in the first place, and yet the world keeps turning and our hearts keep working. and there is a difficult balance to strike! for while we desperately turn inwards in an attempt to suppress ourselves for the greater good, how quickly this can turn into empty and prideful self-flagellation. self-nullification, detachment from the world, its people, and the beautiful gift of present moment. And all the while our aspirations and organizations and institutions rot from their disgusting roots right under our noses! Yet still, the world is not the enemy of Christ, and we are not called to be enemies of the world. Despite everything, we have to love ourselves, each other, and the imperfection of the present moment. That's the whole point!
GOD IS LOVE
